Project iSABRE has 3 main goals:
1.Increase the overall teaching capabilities of Rwandan ICT teachers in secondary schools, with specific focus on rural schools and schools without ICT equipment.
2.Supplement the National Curriculum Development Center’s ICT curricula through the design and development of supplemental instructional resources for ICT material.
3.Raise awareness of ICT-related issues in Rwanda and contribute to the ICT literacy rate of Rwandan youth.
Project iSABRE was founded in June of 2011 when development of its supplemental resource (entitled Simple Teaching: ICT in Rwanda) began. Simple Teaching includes everything from the NCDC’s curricula. This supplemental resource is designed to provide all of the information, tools, and techniques needed to teach in a Rwandan classroom. It is also written in simplified English and vetted to ensure its understandability.
Currently, Simple Teaching has modules for Computer Introduction, Microsoft Office (including Word, Excel, and PowerPoint), and Internet. Future modules and revisions to Simple Teaching are planned and may include Working with OLPCs (One Laptop Per Child) and How to Build and Maintain a Computer Lab, among others.
Simple Teaching: ICT in Rwanda is currently in development and is scheduled to be finalized and released in mid-November of 2012. As of August 2012, a total of 20 Peace Corps Volunteers and 12 Rwandan secondary teachers have been involved in testing and revising Simple Teaching through our Beta Testing Program.
In order to meet our first goal, Project iSABRE plans to utilize Simple Teaching: ICT in Rwanda in a series of rural-focused district and sector-level trainings. These trainings are designed to introduce Simple Teaching: ICT in Rwanda, guide the teachers through using the resource to better understand the material they are tasked with teaching, and creating lesson plans. ToEs are projected to start as early as January 2013.
